Character Discussion Which character did you start out hating but ended up loving, and it genuinely shocked you?

For me, it's Buggy 100%. At the beginning, he felt like this annoyingly forced comic relief character that was never funny.

Impel Down softened him a bit for me, and I started to like him. The Roger flashback and the chapter where he declared he wants the One Piece added so much depth to his character.

Now he's one of my favorites in One Piece, and it's still pretty crazy to me how someone like him has connections to some of the greatest figures in the series and has a level of relevance to the story far beyond what we initially thought.

Momonosuke for me, he just seemed like another perv character with no real point to him but the more we learned the more he developed the higher ranked he became, his back story, his character progression the way he grew from a scared boy to man that fights despite that fear both literally and figuratively he's a bad ass character and in all honesty might have risen to my top 10 favorites

Not “loving”, but I initially hated Akainu & Blackbeard like any typical fan during Marineford. Probably one of the few times I’ve really hated fictional characters.

Now I appreciate both as antagonists.

There’s no character I’ve ever gone from hating to loving in any series.

I also love them for who they can be as they may be redeemed, Luffy too has some issues that if Joyboy or Nika show up they may talk about,

Love is a strong word, but Akainu.

Boa and he were the only One Piece characters I genuinely hated, but I ironically also thought they are underrated.

After constantly supporting them in VS debates, I grew to kinda like Boa and really enjoy Akainu.

Kuzan was lame as corporate slave but (in case he stays on BBP side) turns out he's very based. He just needs to actually kill Garp after using him to bait Luffy for Teach.

Buggy for obvious reasons.

Last but most important Senior Pink! He's simply that man! Who would've thought.

Franky. Oda did a great job at making me find him super annoying and infuriating, to endearing, to loving in the course of two arcs.

I have never hated any one piece characters (except Vander Decken ) but one character I wasn't to fond of but ended up liking later was probably Garp. He grew on me as a character, and I like him a lot more than I did before.

It didn't shock me I wouldn't say that, but back then, I was edgy like most teenagers and preferred the deep wanji. Now I am a zoro guy through and through. I ve came to relate more and more with the idea of just trying to be the best.

in one piece it's Akainu and Franky imo
First time reading marinford I didn't think Akainu was gonna be relevant so i was annoyed with his screentime and wanted to see more of others until the Ace thing happened and i started to go from annoyance to hate for his existence.
Franky was also very annoying during Water 7 and grow on me later on but he has become shit again.

But I gotta agree with OP, Buggy kinda grew on me as well.
Also Pudding. Didn't really like her at first, kinda root for her to get her happy ending now.
