That's why I can't understand why is he so beloved by the scabbards and people of Wano.
I'm fine with imperfect characters (like Oden was too prideful and wanted this to stay a Wano only issue), but I don't feel the story treat him as such
There is a reason why Oden is by far the worst thing to come out of One Piece, and he is a massive stain on Oda's resume. The reason Wano was such an abysmal arc was almost single handidly due to Oden, every problem with Wano traces itself back to Oden.
-The main villain Kaidou was made to look like a chump next to Oden, not only in the FB, but he wouldn't stop glazing him even for a second.
-As if the scabbards and Kaidou glazing Oden wasn't enough,
Oda literally created an entire character for the sole purpose of glazing Oden in Yamato.
-Oda even had everything Zoro did in Wano in reference to Oden. Literally Zoro wasn't even allowed to get credit for his feats without somehow Oden being shoehorned in through a fucking blade....
Basically Wano is Oden the arc, everywhere you turn Oden haunts you. Not even Luffy's underling was safe from having his moments shared with Oden wank.
And who was Oden? Not only was he the guy who left Wano hanging during Kaidou's takeover (where Kaidou was stated to kill his dad), not only was he the same guy who refused help (which would handle the situation overnight) when he eventually came back, this is the same guy who was already strong enough to defeat Kaidou and put an end to him, but instead chose to twerk for 5 years on the streets just to let Kaidou and co gain strength.
Oden is the worst written thing in One Piece, because his actions within the story fail to justify even 5% of the praise he receives. Oden should be closer to Hitler for the Wano citizens than their saviour, but Oda is trying to convince his readers he is the latter. It is the biggest disconnect.
Even ignoring this, objectively his actions made no sense at all, there was no rhyme or reason to twerk for 5 years given he held the position of power and nothing good could come with letting Kaidou and Orochi gain strength.
