We don't downplay anyone, it was Kaido who confirmed that Luffy can truly go toe to toe with Kaido and that he acknowledged him as a fighter.

The intention was to test whether or not Luffy was worthy of the key nothing more, this was not supposed to be a deathmatch. Furthermore we don't even have the full context and it's not like Gaban is just disappearing from the arc, he still has plenty of time to showcase his full power. I have no idea what you were expecting but trust me, Rayleigh would not have the capacity of dealing with an all out Luffy and Zoro working together while not having his primary weapon with him and carrying a giant ass key.

Zoro wasn't gonna fight Gaban

It was gonna be per usual G5 vs Gaban
Gaban knows he can't handle G5 which is why he gave up. He goes on to hype Luffy's strength worthy of a Yonko.

Anything thinking Gaban (axes or not) can handle serious G5 is a troll
Even Saturn and Kizaru couldn't do much to G5 Luffy in 2v1, they got dominated
