Gaban simply gave up resisting.

Oden's partially blocked (at least that's how I see it when I look at the panel) Roger's attack and took from in the front, while Kaido smacked Oden from the back of his head.

I don't think Oden is actually *fragile* since we know cheapshots can very effective but Oda not having Kaido being in hybrid or at least use aCOC despite that power being introduced in this very flashback is such a weird choice and easy slander material.

Every other meaningful OP fight ends with a cheap shot these days. Oda is unmistakably making it clear that taking an attack off guard vs on guard makes a huge difference. He saw it as enough of a justification to have Oden go down on the spot even though aCoC wasn't used and it was a young Base Kaido which was still a wrong move.

Oda is not intressted in powerscaling
He just want to hype someone up and than write the story
