Kizaruber Eats

Imu really turned Gunko into GUNko.
I also felt he was more like Sun Wukong. Baldr is the more commonly suggested parallel but Wizaru's clone powers and apparent fondness for fighting reminds me of Wukong more.

Plus if I recall, Wukong was enlightened and became the Victorious Fighting Buddha....maybe Kizaru will have a heart-to-heart with Sengoku and awaken his "Clear Justice".
YES OMG, YOU COMPLETELY GET IT!

:funky::fransuper::goyea::myman::steef::finally:

Yeah Wukong was famous for his clones, he had 72 transformations at least too. I think IIRC Wukong was literally in the palm of Buddhas hand too, he thought he was standing on a pillar but it turned out to be one of Buddhas fingers? Wukong also made his clones from pulling out a hair at least and splitting it into the clones IIRC?

OMG, Sengoku could actually help Kizaru reach "enlightment/nirvana", how truly fitting! I've always wanted Sengoku to be Kizarus personal mentor, it would be far too fitting. The Victorious Fighting Buddha you say? Interesting...

Isn't it interesting that Buddha form Sengoku clashed with Luffy in Marineford too? Oda is cooking something BIG with Sengoku and Kizaru, I can't wait.

I always expected Garp to be Akainus mentor and hero/idol, it makes FAR TOO MUCH sense but if he canonises Zephyr, I would gladly accept that instead. Garp did train the Admirals though didn't he? Even though Zephyr was said to do it too?

I've seen people say Tsuru is the one who trained Akainu or was his mentor and that could open up a whole new interesting side to Akainu too, like how we've seen new sides to Kuzan and Kizaru and them showing new moves and fighting styles. Akainu might have a much calmer state when fighting than hes shown, almost like Ultra Instinct maybe, to reflect how lava is magma when it erupts from the volcano and cools down as lava? And thus lava can solidify and become extremely dense and thus rigid/sturdy too ofc?

Akainu was the one who tricked Squad to betray and stab Whitebeard on a blatant, shameless lie so Akainu probably has a more cunning side that he might have learned from Tsuru or she fostered it, as shes meant to be a great strategist apparently? Funny how her devil fruit "cleanses evil" and Akainu wants to "cleanse all evil" from the world in a more brutal, "absolute" way with his magma as he sees all pirates as evil ofc.

Doflamingo ran from Tsuru when he was younger and yet he wasn't scared of her when they transported him recently though but he must have had reason to fear her back then at least? Maybe as some theorise, because she can cleanse the evil out of him? Possibly permanently too?

A heart to heart with Sengoku would go so hard and Sengoku could relate on the loss of Corazon and maybe Kizaru will keep an eye out for Law and help him secretly after this? I could see them shrewdly working together in future somehow maybe? I've wanted to see Law work with Sword or Revolutionaries ideally.

I don't much about Baldr but I'd like that too, parallels like that to real life mythology are always really cool and fascinating to me. Makes characters somehow more compelling and relatable I guess? Since you can relate them to something you know IRL or w/e and thus understand htem better?

Its funny how I talk about the Admirals and thus Akainu and this certain song plays for me lol:

🧠 Oda's Influences: Why the Connection Makes Sense

1. Akainu’s Character Design
  • Directly based on Bunta Sugawara, the actor who played Shozo Hirono — the main character in Battles Without Honor and Humanity.

  • Even Akainu’s stony face and smoking habit are drawn from Sugawara’s portrayal

  • Oda has explicitly said in interviews that he modeled Sakazuki’s appearance on Sugawara.
2. Ideology Parallel: Ruthless Pragmatism
  • Shozo Hirono in the films is trapped in a chaotic post-war moral vacuum, where ideals mean nothing.

  • Similarly, Akainu discards moral nuance in favor of a single guiding principle: "Absolute Justice".

  • Both characters eliminate threats without hesitation, seeing it as a necessary evil for a “greater order.”
3. Lack of Sentimentality

  • Fukasaku’s films reject the romanticism of older yakuza cinema.

  • Oda channels this in Akainu — especially during the Marineford War, where his actions aren’t meant to be "cool" or likable, just realistic within his worldview.
4. Power Struggle & Betrayal Themes

  • Battles is built on shifting alliances, betrayals, and internal purges.

  • Akainu rises to power by defeating Aokiji in a civil battle for Fleet Admiral — a move mirroring the backstabbing ambition of yakuza politics.

  • Sakazuki's duel with Aokiji is the ultimate “no honor” moment within the Navy — justice is no longer unified.

🎵 Even the Title Resonates

“Battles Without Honor and Humanity” could describe the Marineford arc itself.

It’s a brutal conflict where:
  • Morality is ambiguous
  • Heroes die (Ace, Whitebeard)
  • Justice becomes a weapon of the state
  • Akainu acts as a necessary monster in a world spinning toward chaos

📜 Summary

Element Influences from Battles Without Honor and Humanity:

Character model Akainu = Bunta Sugawara (Shozo Hirono)

Worldview

Ruthless, pragmatic, morally gray: This worldview suggests a focus on practical results above all else, even if it means making difficult or ethically questionable decisions. There's little room for sentimentality or traditional morality.

Ideology

"Absolute Justice" mirroring "survival over honor": This indicates that their core belief system, while outwardly appearing as "Absolute Justice," is fundamentally driven by a cold, utilitarian calculation where survival and efficiency take precedence over personal honor or ethical considerations. It's justice pursued through any means necessary for perceived stability or order.

Themes

Internal power struggles: The constant conflict for control or influence within the system itself.

Betrayal: The frequent occurrence of trust being broken for personal gain or perceived strategic advantage.

Cold utilitarianism: Decisions are made based purely on what yields the greatest perceived benefit for the whole, often at the expense of individual rights or well-being.

Narrative Role

Embodiment of a flawed system's brutal efficiency: This entity or character serves to represent how a system, despite its flaws, can still operate with extreme effectiveness and harshness, prioritizing its own function above all else.

Brief spoilers, can't reveal my source:
- The haki Luffy and co felt wasn't Imu's
- We cut to the sun world to Imu reacting to the same CoC blast
- Imu has a worse expression than when he felt Joyboy's haki
- a black pillar falls down from the Heaven World directly on to Gunko/Imu
- a second CoC blast happens, followed by a booming voice saying "what is that ruckus down there?"
- last page, we see a huge winged silhouette in the clouds above the Sun World (like in Skypea)

Editor's note: That imposing figure?! Could it be...?!!
