No, he's not dumb.

He turned off flame mode to use invisible speed to increases his chances at hitting Zoro. Unfortunate for him, Zoro's reaction speed was too fast.

At the end of the battle he turned off flame mode because he was no longer confident it was strong enough to protect him from Zoro's AP. Zoro even called him out about it.


King response wasn't you can't damage me in flame mode. Instead it was you can't beat me because you're human.


King increasing his speed, increasing his distance, and attacking with a long range attack increase his chances of evading Zoro's attack. That was the smartest thing to do in that situation.

Oda set up for King flame mode to be less effective against Zoro's AP earlier in the chapter.

After Zoro obtained ACoC King called him a threat and avoided his KoH attacks. Even in flame mode.

Ngl I was hoping he would have a merienda moment like Katakuri where his big dirty secret is that's he's a self repressed self flaggelating/burning masochist and okama and zoro would have the most awkward fight with him, similar to that weird, camp masochist Dice guy he fought in Film Gold.

Imagine a truly unholy combination of sephiroth, shishio from rurouni kenshin and okamas. God help us all.

I agree too, it felt like oda was trying to give us another daz bones or ohm maybe but he takes Zoro way too seriously when Zoro pre TS had some absolutely hilarious moments, actually smiled and laughed and was pretty chilled.
I understand he's traumatised after all that happened at Sabaody and maybe with Enel and Luffy losing Ace etc and he spent 2 years with the ultimate death by stoicism, sigma male Mihawk, but I wish Oda would let Zoro have more fun in his fights and some sillier but still extremely competent opponents.

Bon clay was a perfect example of an extremely competent but absolutely ridiculous and unhinged opponent lmao.

Bleach was all about sword wank and swordsmen but it had amazing humour and a well balanced range of tones, especially in the anime too.

Like all the SHs Zoro has become a flanderised edgy parody of himself. Same with Law too omfg, I love Law but his pre TS self especially at Sabaody when he first appeared was him at his best.

OP has so much misery porn and edginess in it now it's ridiculous. But also the extreme opposite too.
