It's possible like you said skysplit is a narrative tool between pirates.

Seems like it yeah. So far it looks like Oda seems to favour huge shockwave clashes to showcase power for PK level fighters, skysplitting for Yonkos and terraforming for Admirals.

Ofc it's possible that generic shockwave clashes are just the new "in" thing for Oda, and that we won't see skysplits or PH style terraforming again, but hopefully that won't be so.

Curious about Imu/HK equivalent if there is any. I don't think we'll see two HKs fighting though.

ACoC clashes don’t even mean that characters are equals lol (though Garp is still close to Roger regardless). It just means neither character can steamroll the other.

Was Fruitless Primebeard equal to Roger because they had an ACoC clash?
Was Fruitless Oldbeard equal to Shanks because they had an ACoC clash?
Was Fruitless Luffy equal to Hybrid Kaido because they had an ACoC clash?
Was Yamato equal to Kaido because they had an ACoC clash?
