Why is Blackbeard the way he is and why did he suffer?

Because he was pushed into it by Imu's rule, right?

So what, he is just going to recreate that evil and get defeated, basically suffering for nothing and being a complete moron?

I would much rather see him get redeemed

BB is still a villain are we really saying it okay to be part of the slave trade come on now lol.

BB is not a clear cut villain.

He's a chill guy with questionable and sometimes dark morals, that's it.

His one real "villain action" was killing Thatch - I'll give you that. Even the whole Ace situation wasn't evil at all. Ace himself went after him and even then BB did everything to convince Ace to join him without violence. Then Ace attacked. Him delivering Ace to the WG was just a simple business decision, too. He actually even told Luffy that he cheers for him and that there is a chance that he can free Ace.

Compare that to Imu & Co. - they are 1000 times more evil/villainous than BB.

Stopping to think about it, Kaidou imprisoning Yamato in Wano comes from this — children are the parents’ weak spots. Xebec fell because of it, Ace was killed, Luffy wasn’t killed only because he’s the protagonist but was still temporarily killed by Kaidou in Wano, and Sabo was declared dead.
