If I had to guess on how Kuma escaped, it might be because of Big Mom. She wasn't that far apart from Saturn, so maybe Big Mom saw Saturn and decided to attack him, this allowed Kuma to escape.

Oda has structured this last saga around three big infodump speeches that he can give the reader every bit of information necessary for the story to function.
We had VP and the AK/floods.
Now we have Loki and GV/Rocks.
On the next island we'd likely have someone tell us at length about JB and the Void.

That's the problem. No one is telling Rocks adventures because the ones who knows are not there. It totally broke how flashbacks works in One Piece
