Ngl, I have to agree with
@TheAncientCenturion : Oda is really terrible at writing good threatening villains ever since WCI. The issue is he introduces a new powerful or already existing group but then uses them as hypetools in the moment when they are supposed to show why they are feared like that.
As much as I find it funny how Garling got wrecked, this guy was the leader of the Holy Jobbers in God Valley - the same rank like Shamrock whom presumably was near Shanks level, yet he got low diffed despite having a whole ass demon army on his side. Sure, it means Xebec is too powerful but Idk...
The worst part is Oda actually went back and nerfed characters that had already shown success.
Take Jack: man has a huge, fearsome introduction. We get to Wano, Jack gets insulted by Queen and King for doing NOTHING, then gets used as a hype-tool for Asura Douji, who later dies to... bombs...
And then Jack spends the rest of the arc doing nothing but getting smacked around by Minks in boring fights with no stakes where it was obvious Jack was going to lose
What an actual fucking waste of a character you had already built up to be a fearsome force.
Neko and Inu survived criticism because they had already fought Jack fairly evenly, and both had fun finishers, but the overall Minks vs Beast Pirates plotline turned into such ass in Wano
And then there's poor fucking Sanji
Like, holy shit, Oda
This is why Black Clover is one of my favorite shounen: almost all of the villains have legit hype, and have done/continuously do crazy shit. There's like one character that REALLY got shafted due to the manga's pacing going awry due to Tabata's family's health, and that's about it.
Show us Sommers vs Saul, let us actually see that Saul is strong, but Sommers is much stronger.
One Piece has horrible problems with "Show don't Tell", it is always telling us shit then showing like a nip-slip at best of what was teased.
