Because the Marines would have lost. Kaido wanted Ace for himself, the missing card in his crew, and if Kaido and Newgate joined forces, with King, the Marines aren't winning, especially when Teach shows up.
Characters like Shanks and Sengoku do things for the sake of preserving world balance. When Newgate starts talking about how the Final War is inevitable, is one of the only times we really see Senkgoku crash out. Off the top of my head, it's pretty much this, and when he hears Magellan wants to kill himself:

Sengoku and the Marines want to PREVENT this war.
Shanks/Kaido view it as inevitable, but, Shanks wants to wait for the right person/time (Luffy and the Dawn), while Kaido just wanted to throw the world into war.
King of the Pirates is a title held by Joy Boy in the past; the King of the Pirates IS the Joy Boy of the era. This is why Kaido was depressed: since he found out he wasn't Joy Boy, Kaido realized he couldn't become the King, and so, Kaido didn't really try to, despite being so close to Lodestar. I believe Kaido visited Shyarly when he picked up Scien.

Scien/Queen joined Kaido 26 years ago. Cutty Flam/Franky was abandoned by Scien on Water 7 during this time (Franky didn't realize Queen was his father in Wano, because Queen used to be much thinner and sexier).
Water 7 is near Fish-Man Island; I think Kaido heard about Shyarly's prophecies, and wanted to ask her about Joy Boy. Jack is a Fish-Man, and would have been 2 here, since he's 28. I'd imagine Kaido found Jack fighting as a 2-year-old, was impressed, and, since Jack had no family, Kaido adopted him.

Shanks knew the Marines losing in Marineford would cause a swell in evil pirates, and global instability, so he stopped Kaido from helping Whitebeard win. After, Kaido's been depressed as shit, because he thinks he failed again, and that Joy Boy died.
BUT, Shanks told Kaido something when they fought: "The man who will become Joy Boy... the King of the Pirates... is Monkey D. Luffy."
After Kaido thinks Luffy is dead the first time, he is DESPAIRING.
"You couldn't be Joy Boy EITHER, it seems."
King served Kaido at first, because he believed he was Joy Boy, but his loyalty kept him on board, even when it was clear Kaido wasn't. Even Kaido laughed at the idea, while drinking.
But, when King met Kaido, Kaido 1000% had the D Smile going, he wanted to be Joy Boy/King of the Pirates
Kaido gave up on being Joy Boy, and, instead, did the things that would CREATE Joy Boy. Kaido put all his efforts into war, so Joy Boy in the future could defeat the WG with the army Kaido built.
"Apparently, Oden's desire to open the country, is meant to welcome Joy Boy. If he's the same as the man you're waiting for, then I think I know who Joy Boy is"
Why does Kaido know Joy Boy will beat him? Because he asked Shyarly, the prophet, who Joy Boy was, and her answer was:
The man who defeats Kaido.
This is huge for Luffy and Yamato, because it means that Kaido was trying to save Ace, and Shanks stopped him.
Shanks chose the Dawn/Luffy's new era, over his Captain's only son, Portgas D. Ace.
This will be a giant conflict for Yamato and Luffy, and is one of the reasons Oda is pushing Luffy being such a Shanks' stan, and Zoro criticizing it:
Shanks is far from perfect, and his actions directly led to Ace's death.
Newgate was dying in Marineford either way, and, if Kaido and King show up, the Marines lose: they'd still exist, but, the New World and Paradise would be taken over by Pirates, especially Big Mom and Kaido.
Shanks traded Ace's life for global stability, and I have no idea how Luffy will react to that.
