Most marines fight pirates 99% of the time. Those who do evil stuff like invading countries are the Holy Knights. You can accuse the marines of turning a blind eye but the average marine hardly assists the WG and does help the people.

Would much of this piracy crap be happening if the World Government never existed? Just sounds like the fodder marines are at best trying to take care of the symptoms so that the cancer that is the WG stay on top. Even if it's not their intent to protect the evil government, that's what the fodder Marines are doing. I'm not saying it's easy, but there are definitely alternatives that people like Garp and other Marines could of taken if they really cared about justice besides serving an evil entity like the World Government.

BULLSHIT. They kept a guy like Crocodile in Impel Down. They killed Ace solely due to his birth, just like they killed all those babies for potentially being Rogers son. If Garp was okay with Ace dying due to being a criminal, Garp should have let Dragon die or rot in jail as well for the "crimes" he committed to end up there.

Well yea there was too much to gain for the Marines there. Ace was to be used as an example for the pirate world. He's a symbol.

So what you're asking is Garp should have fought the top brass to just lock him up instead of executing him? Breaking him out is out of question.

Why does Garp have to pull out the duty card on Ace when he knows that Ace was never a bad person to begin with? His position in the World Government is already jeopardized, and one last act of defiance at his age would not change anything. He most likely already set up SWORD and Koby to move against Imu, so there is no reason for him to act like an obedient dog at this moment. If anything, saving Ace would do more good for the world. He will be an asset against Imu in the future, Garp should have known this.

To chime in about Ace and Dragon:

Ace was definitely a pirate, he flew the Jolly Roger, captained his own crew, the works. But him being the son of Roger was the paramount "crime" he was being executed for. Even if he lived a humble life as a fisherman, if the WG learned who he really was and where he lived, he still would have been dragged to Marineford to be executed.

As the WG operates on the "sins of the father" style of law. So, Ace simply was an enemy of an injust world from day one.

Dragon, had Garp not saved him, would have likely been tried as a would-be pirate and executed as the WG is corrupt and authoritarian.

Exactly. Ace public execution is because of his bloodline and that's unjust enough for Garp to do something.

Didnt say they were the only good marines, Im sure there are more but the way Oda has been going about it. With this, Ohara, Egghead. Its kinda hard to argue that the majority of the marines are good guys doing good deeds only, Im sure they do ''good deeds'' by stopping pirates and shit, but then you also have these whacky missions where they have to obey orders and they do shady shit.

It's because the story focuses on everything bad related to the WG, but we're clearly mean to believe that the average marine is upstanding despite the pressence of corrupt trash.
