Prior to that, there was still hope he did actually have a relationship with Akainu.

The difference in career timelines doesn't really matter. There's already substantial reasoning established for Dragon's career to stall - assuming he warranted promotions.

GV could've been an impetus for Dragon to pursue strength.

imo Ohara should've been not the final straw, but an accelerator in plans to defect since GV.

He should not have been at the Reverie. Having the Celestial Dragons wanted to enslave or torture him and then still going forward was a huge mistake. He should have been blissfully naive.

How many times have we heard this, though? There's always the notion that it will be shown next - but this flashback shows that eve for thr most significant event for the old gen, Oda couldn't bother integrating Gaban and Rayleigh into the story to any meaningful degree.
