Ray and Gaban came back to carry Roger and Garp away with no complaints, because they have a good connection to both in different ways.

Even Roger and Garp being too dumb to realize something weird happened to Rocks before VOAT kicked in is relatively in character. They’re both dumb
But Whitebeard has always been portrayed as a relatively smart guy. Tactics, ability to read peoples emotions (like with Ace), etc
He was always portrayed as “the odd one out” amongst a lot of the Pirate top tiers (barring subordinates like Rayleigh and Gaban who are also sensible)
