I don't get why Oda tries to make Sanji look like a hypetool in situations like this since he literally can not attack characters like Kalifa or Black Maria no matter what. It doesn't make them look any stronger if they beat him up, because he was never trying to actually fight back at all. I don't get why he always does this

I disagree tbh. Zoro’s among my favorite characters but you can tell pretty much from the beginning that he’s manufactured to be “the cool guy”

3 swords, bandana, works out 24/7, endurance monster, cool one liners in every fight, level headed (mostly)

“I never pray to god” or Arlong saying that he’s too dangerous to be left alive, every other character saying he reminds them of a demon, telling Kaku that his swords hunger for blood, etc

None of this is new

I just think that Oda used to balance this out better with goofy Zoro moments. Now he’s almost strictly the cool guy instead of the cool guy that can goof off with everyone else

It's all the same at the end of the day. The preskip approach felt natural because he felt more relatable, there were things (like you stated) keeping him grounded. Post skip feels like we're being force fed slop. Heck like I posted earlier even his design and demeanour post skip gives off a tryhard vibe.

I don't even have to read One Piece to know postskip Zoro is trying too hard tbh, one look gives it away.
