Sengoku was pressuring the entire BBP for a bit, if he ever gets written into the modern story, he's going to have feats making it obvious Luffy surviving him was kind of plot.

I don't think this excuses him at all. Oda had many ways to make Luffy survive him. Look at how he survived Akainu or the other Admirals.

Him surviving Sengoku was simply Sengoku being a bum and then Sengoku quits his duties mid war, giving his soldiers a concession speech. This somehow went under the radar. Sengoku admitted defeat.

I mean sure Sengoku is still a top tier if we ever see him do something today, but relative to the rest of the cast his showing was given no respect.
