What do you think of George Lucas as a storyteller anyways?
In general also a very good storyteller. I say "in general" because in the details, he tends to lack precision and punch.
Now it is not a mistake if the Original Star wars was a hit. The film managed to profit from a great editing and an amazing soundtrack. Lucas was not alone as mentionned before here:
George Lucas isn't even George Lucas. The original Star Wars was written primarily by a ghost writer named Alan Dean Foster and it's his work that made SW a legend, George Lucas is an opportunist hack.
Although people need to understand that the script was already written and storytelling is not only the script or the worldbuilding or the editing or the direction, it's everything together. All the ways these tools are used to tell a story, in the script, the visual, the editing, the music, the direction, the lighting etc.
So Lucas is a great storyteller as he was smart enough to surround himself with amazing teams and people to help him tell exactly what he wanted to tell. He managed to create coherency between generations of characters and thematics and had great ideas of concept overall. Outside of that, he is kinda average in term of narration, even bad sometimes.
But there is one thing he did good : He took his work seriously.
