Harald explicitly told us he wasn't able/wasn't sure to beat Ragnir before the HK boost, so I don't really know what to tell you.
Also, after:
- Ragnir's ice took no problem omen attacks from Imu;
- was compared to diamond (at least) last chapter, and we know diamond took Mihawk's slashes and anyway it's probably the most durable thing out there:

Harald said clearly that Ragnir had never chose a
worthy giant to eat the fruit/become his master, even trough many tried. He never said that Ragnir defeated all the former giants that tried to take the fruit, neither that the former giants tried to take it by force.
HK Harald thought that with his new powers he would be worthy to wield Ragnir and eat the fruit, but would he be chosen by Ragnir?
About the protecting part, I have to spell out why Loki don't want Ragnir to face risks for him?
Risk? What risk dude? Look at the chapter, read the translation. It was an omen that Jinbe casually destroyed.

Imu actually put way more effort into blocking/stopping Loki than supercharegd G5. Not to mention he even had to boost himself with Omen.
And Loki still took many more attacks from Imu than supercharged G5. Some of them literally doing no damage to him.
And not to mention the "sneak attack" lol.
Luffy:

If the fight is over and Luffy was in fact negged, it wont change the fact that Loki was also low diffed, both of them low diffed by a weaked version of Imu.
