I will never understand how some thought that Oda would kill off Gaban.

Oda is not going kill off one of the legendary old men who also has a wife and child.

Oda couldn't kill off Pound and Kuma, he couldn't kill off Kinemon and Kiku, and even for Vegapunk that he did kill off, he still brought him back by having an exact clone of the original Vegapunk.

So yeah, no way Oda was going to kill off Gaban.
