I dont think its the self loathing thing, its more like letting yourself die instead of trying to push through. Its more like a fall guy thing imo. And I think that is what Zoro or other fans have said or what is more generally called aura. Its easy to just sacrifice yourself and think it will solve the problem but when your mentality is to push through, survive and win at all costs, that is what takes real strength and courage. And you can see this in real world people too.
You’re saying this now but this is a clear example of revisionist history. I know you, I don’t think you’re being malicious or trying to twist the truth when you say this, but that’s just not true

Go back to almost any thread from 5 years ago, 10 years ago, it really doesn’t matter how long. The panel that’s posted more often than any other is the one from Baratie, where Sanji tells Zoro to give up on his dream if it means death. Keep in mind, this panel is proven to be a facade in the same arc yet it’s been reposted for longer than some WorstGen members have even been alive

Then let’s look at some other very common points amongst the Zoro fandom. “He doesn’t have a kingly ambition” which is something that is easily disproven when you look at the list of conqueror’s dating back 10-15 years. Whitebeard didn’t have a kingly ambition nor did Ace yet this point was still parroted endlessly

“He’s just a cook, not a fighter” Again, nonsense considering Sanji has almost always fought the 3rd strongest enemy in most arcs. Why this was brought up consistently still eludes me to this day

“He lacks willpower” This one was a surprisingly common talking point considering Sanji has some of the best showcases when it comes to willpower in One Piece. You may not respect it, you may not think it’s cool, but doubting that Sanji has absurd willpower is a choice, to say the least

Look at it this way, its not a 1v1 example but in Batman, for Bruce to make the climb and the jump, the fear of dying was involved but here it is the will to live. And in this regard I think Law and Sanji are alike whereas Luffy, Zoro and Kid are different. I mean in this very flashback we see all the times Sanji is willing to die. Sacrificing like that is an easy cop out, yeah I did my job, now I can die or dying was me doing my job.

Contrast this with Zoro whose whole thing started from surviving that punishment and then going on to the nothing happened moment. Just pushing beyond his limits to survive so that he can achieve his dream. Even when was against the odds (Mihawk encounter) he didnt step back not because he accepted defeat and wanted to survive nor was he willing to die because he was sacrificing himself but because stepping back meant abandoning his dream.
I agree, except the whole point of Baratie is that he has that in him, he just suppresses it. This isn’t some foreign concept to Sanji that he doesn’t understand at all nor is it something that he’s never truly possessed

The point of Zeff’s spear of grit speech is that Sanji does have that in him, he just tucks it away for the sake of others which is a character flaw

But that ties into my next point. The argument that was usually made when bringing that up is that conqueror’s aren’t allowed any lapses in judgement or mental weaknesses (which is already wrong, since Luffy was going to give up on his dream when Ace died)

Whenever I brought up the fact that Koby was guaranteed to become a conqueror despite being forced to become Alvida’s lapdog/manservant/slave I was usually met with Zoro fans claiming that his situation was “different” from Sanji’s. Well, I can’t act like I didn’t know why it was okay for Koby and not for Sanji (for Zoro fans)

Anyway, my point is that these things weren’t said before this happened. Anyone that’s been in the OP fandom for long enough knows what you said wasn’t spoken about often for why Sanji was disqualified from having conqueror’s haki
