Oda could've at least showed an example of self-hate in Egghead/Elbaf. He had 150 chapters to do so.
Like when Sanji failed vs Saturn, or Kizaru, or Nasjuro, not a single moment of self-hate or reflection. Same with vs Imu like 15 chapters ago.
It's just recycling what was already resolved in Wano at this point.

Vegapunk prepared the message because he thought the WG would 100% kill him and there was no way out. He wasn't suicidal (different from sanji). He wanted to continue his research.
Little did he know he got mr. could dodge every attack (maybe). Unfortunately he didn't feel like it so he's dead and also failed to help his captain maintain a promise. Maybe YOU should read the story.

First hint to Sanji having a secret past was in chapter 56, which opened on a 9 year old Sanji working on the Orbit without any explanation.
The name Vinsmoke did not appear until the last panel of chapter 812, that's 756 chapters later.
Mind you, Oda referenced Sanji's past in some way in every saga of preskip:
East Blue - flashback begins on a ship w/o context
Alabasta - Mr Prince + ch 124 cover art hint
Skypiea - reveals North Blue origin
Water 7 - WG learns of him but somehow fail to get his likeness
Thriller Bark - Sanji reveals he read a Devil Fruit Encyclopedia as a kid
Summit War - Duval appears in an Iron Mask, cementing theories around Sanji as an actual prince

The stella body is very material and Lilith isn't the same as stella vegapunk but a separate being (it's a theme of the arc w stussy).
Vegapunk would've preferred not to die. And Luffy maintaned his promise with a technicality.
And this is just the last arc. Sanji was overpowered countless times in the story, it's a battle manga, the crew is constantly in danger.
Should I think he could or could've not avoided it?

The whole “Sanji refusing to dodge because he has low self worth” reminds me of when Oda weirdly kept insisting in WCI that Sanji is the nicest guy ever. Like sure, Sanji’s a kind dude, but nothing about his character writing suggested he was the nicest dude ever. There’s several SHs that are more kind than him
Did zoro love himself less than Sanji here? 
Sanji moved like "Better me than Luffy and you, give me a cool death at least..."
Zoro moved like "I need to get through this or im not worth to be in the position i am"
Thus why he says "nothing happened", that was a mere test, and Sanji understands thaf as well, thus whu assured that no one else knew about it
Zoro probably didn't like Sanji's reasonings compares to his own reasonings
