The stella body is very material and Lilith isn't the same as stella vegapunk but a separate being (it's a theme of the arc w stussy).
Vegapunk would've preferred not to die. And Luffy maintaned his promise with a technicality.
And this is just the last arc. Sanji was overpowered countless times in the story, it's a battle manga, the crew is constantly in danger.
Should I think he could or could've not avoided it?
How do y'all like this shit?
It's honestly a shame about this arc, because Stussy's backstory is way better than Bonney's and they could've develop that. Sucks.

Not saying the North Blue past was a retcon, saying the self-hate was.
Self-hate is the incorrect term for it. Sanji doesn't hate himself, nor does he lack confidence or self-acceptance. His problem is that he does not attach a healthy value to his life, and that's been a consistent throughline since his introduction.

In the Baratie arc, we learned he became strong for Zeff and was willing to die to repay his so-called debt with his life. He could not see the restaurant was not the old man's pride and joy. He was.

At Arlong Park, he prevented Zoro from jumping in the water to safe Luffy and did it himself.

On Drum Island, he threw Luffy and Nami to safety and nearly died in the process, breaking ribs and fracturing his spine.

On Skypiea, he saved Usopp and took an El Thor for it.

On Thriller Bark, he insisted Kuma take his head to spare Zoro's life.

You get the gist. There is an imbalance in Sanji. Selfishness is not inherently bad, nor selflessness inherently good. A King must balance the two, and Sanji never has, because the only value he attached to his life is what he could do with it for others. First Zeff, then Luffy and his crew.

Sanji can't become a King for anyone but himself.

Yes. And Lilith said she was bringing Stella back. She’s putting his soul and mind in a new body. But it’s still Stella
Stella Vegapunk still died, which could've been avoided apparently, or maybe not?
Until we see what sanji with self love can do I guess.
Oda just hit character reset on sanji until we get his feats.
Good writing btw. He put so many things on this character, three backstories, 5 character conflict, he just had him as a mental patient and called it a day.

Zoro wasn't willing to die for the sake of dying or "making a cool sacrifice", he was considering the possibility of dying (pretty different approach) but wanting to endure it for Luffy and for the sake of being the WSS swordsman.

Sanji moved like "Better me than Luffy and you, give me a cool death at least..."

Zoro moved like "I need to get through this or im not worth to be in the position i am"

Thus why he says "nothing happened", that was a mere test, and Sanji understands thaf as well, thus whu assured that no one else knew about it

Zoro probably didn't like Sanji's reasonings compares to his own reasonings
That's pure horseshit, Zoro was fully ready for dying here. In fact he literally offered his death instead of luffy's.
Him actually surviving a death sentence that would kill 5 luffys in a row was not expected at all. Not even by Kuma himself.

Lilith also has her own soul and brain, she's a gemmation of Vegapunk but they developed into different entities while all being vegapunk. Hence york betrays them. It's again, a theme of the arc.
They're on completely different levels

Because Stussy is a fully realized human being. She has her own free will, her own personality, everything about her is her own. Meanwhile, the other Vegapunks, Lilith, Edison, and the rest, they're still conditioned by Vegapunk's personality.

Lilith is evil because she embodies a specific trait of Vegapunk's malice. York is greed because she embodies a specific trait of Vegapunk. And they're all only two years old (while Stussy is 35yo), they likely born as adult, while Stussy went through the phases of life, like, child, teenager, adult...so they aren't 100% human the way Stussy is. And they are half cyborg too. Stussy is not a cyborg like them

Luffy sacrifices himself for randos every arc. and he would die if not for plot armor. Strawhats constantly do for eachother.
Bellmere sacrifice herself, Whitebeard did, Ace did, etc.
But only gets portrayed as a negative when Sanji does it? Nami would've died from the Drum avalanche, or El Thor, and Oda certainly didn't portray his sacrifice as a bad thing back then.

This.

In Wano everyone says his development was over. But it wasn't. He didn't destroy the raid suit because he himself wanted to not turn into a monster, he still considered it. The option was what Luffy would want and the memory of what Luffy told him. Again, like Kamina telling Simon to believe in him who believes in Simon. Believe in Luffy who believes in Sanji. It was still attached to someone else.

Now it's time Sanji believes in Sanji and does what Sanji wants because Sanji chooses it

I just realized Sanji got a character retcon story 1200 chapters in lol
"Best writing"

The whole theme of the arc is that Vegapunks evolved in unforseen ways.
Liliths is the evil part but she's actually just raunchy and violent but a generally good and caring person, cries for every vegapunk death, hinting at the fact vegapunk isn't very evil.
York is desire and she turned evil, meaning vegapunk is a person that desires a lot of things, a greedy person. Because vegapunk doesn't know himself 100%, and compertimentalizing himself developed new people.
Stussy is a clone of stussy but she is evolving in different ways and so forth.
Nurture > nature is the theme of the arc.

The difference between the examples you're citing and Sanji, is that Sanji did it because he doesn't think his life is as valuable as the lives of the people he wants to save.

Ace is very much like Sanji, and also what you could call an imperfect Conqueror. Only, Ace never got to learn the lesson Sanji just did.
