Great chapter. Pound coming through for his daughters like Kaido came through for his boy Jack. I'm just tearing up as I finally smell the end of this cover serial.
Drake is clean! Tama's village, Sobamask, and the rebels got what they deserved! In the alliance he goes. At least Luffy seems to think so, maybe Sanji as well. Zoro, Franky and Jinbe are rightly suspicious of why Drake is desperately flipping sides in his state and begging for allies. Interesting to see he was meeting up with members of Sword undercover and was exposed to Koby's pro-Luffy propoganda before Act 3. Sakazuki better do something about that boyy. In WCI, it was Capone who constructed his own anti-Big Mom plan and the Strawhats had to negotiate their way into his scheme. Law saved Luffy in Marineford. Kid never served Kaido and bonded with Luffy over in Udon. Drake is in a more complicated circumstance here that will require some explanation. Funny that Luffy runs off and delegates the X-Drake confirmation task to Zoro. They'll be best friends in no time. But before that, Apoo starts being an absolute menace as usual and Queen joins the battle just to ensure unmitigated chaos. I think it's time for Brook to play these amateurs a real number..
The lovable Usopp and Nami duo stepping up big time and against the dino siblings. Ulti with a little too much skull and not enough brain up there. Yeah Franky/Brook/Robin showed off against a Yonko, but the weakest and most cowardly Strawhats need their due as well. The Strawhats start splitting up again as even Franky gets chased by Hatcha. Apoo is revealed as the official snitch and apparent manager of the Numbers. First of all, who in their right mind would apply for such a job and how did Apoo come out on top? Is Apoo's taste in music responsible for Hatcha looking like Elton John? Hopefully with Apoo's guidance the other half of the Numbers might save face for the group as a whole. All we need now is for Doc Chop to have his moment too and luckily Queen busts out a machine gun, spraying the field with another bio-chemical concoction. Let's pause for a moment and appreciate the wide variety of weapons Queen has used from swords to guns to clubs to viruses to his own head and we still don't know what the mechanical arm is hiding.
Sulong Inu and Neko finally make their appearance sporting legendary mustaches to rival Kaido. Clean shaven men like Jack get quickly overwhelmed, these are possibly Oden's two strongest retainers right now. But it wasn't a bad display by Kaido's side at all. The stunning thing is that the power of Sulong wasn't shut down by somebody blocking the moon, Yonko Kaido or Big Mom eating their full force, instead all credit goes to Jack and the boys he brought up. Jack finally got one right, except for the two remaining Minks. It's interesting to see Kaido step in and save his valuable subordinate. Doflamingo would get mocked for being too weak, Sheepshead would get strung up and beaten bloody, Holdem was afraid Kaido came to Bakura town to take his life. But daddy Kaido comforts Jack by telling them they are simply too strong. When you see his failures at Zou, retrieving Doflamingo, retrieving Shutenmaru all get brushed aside, you do the get the feeling Jack is treated like Kaido's second son. Go get cleaned up, eat a senzu bean, and do something about that broken tusk, Jack. Oda has different plans for you. Most likely a fair 1v1 fight where you can finally showcase your full set of abilities.
Chapter ends with the fight that kicked off the raid: Scabbards vs Kaido. Kin'emon taking care of a Boro Breath and then nicking dragon Kaido. Even Oden sliced the dragon from 20 years ago. Kin'emon's ability to cut fire with no DF was easily written off, but turns out it was an art he trained his butt off in Orochi's Wano all those years just to specifically counter Kaido's flames. Insanity. Kin, Inu, Neko and by extension all the retainers are revealing they're no joke. Kaido is not simply swatting a bunch of flies anymore. The Scabbards all yearn for their death, but they won't make it easy. I expect each Scabbard to come up with a big hit that wounds Kaido and adds to his final injury count. There is no clear direction for the story in the middle of all these split up fights so I imagine we'll getting more updates on multiple fronts next chapter. One major event is that Big Mom should probably recover by now. It's unclear what milestone Oda wants to hit by Chapter 1000, but hopefully he can make it this year.
