That's just a common figure of speech. Did you see Luffy use food against Imu in any of the panels where they fought? I'll say it again: Kaido is superior to Luffy in overall stats, as well as everyone else in Elbaf. None of the attacks we've seen in Elbaf so far would do anything serious to him.
