This self-hate retcon was made in WCI. Pre-skip he sacrificed himself for his crew, like how Luffy did vs Kuzan, Zoro vs Kuma, the whole crew vs Kuma (taking the nuke rather than give Luffy). It was never portrayed as some bad thing. I guess if Enel is going to 200mil volt Nami and Usopp next...
