Piccolo trained after death and absorbed a Namekian fighter before confronting Frieza, though. It's obvious that Namek's absorption is a great power boost (as Piccolo's fight against Imperfect Cell and Android 17 also showed). This is so unlike Hajrudin fight against Imu.
Literally Piccolo gave a fight to Frieza's second or third form (the Big muscular one, IIRC) in Namek, how is that not close to the Saiyans when only the Saiyans were any challenge whatsoever to Frieza at Namek?
Piccolo also fought the first Imperfect Cell in that city when Cell first attacked...
