Character Discussion People love to criticize Luffy, but Zoro is as one dimensional as it gets

Yeah, but zoro is your run of the mill shounen badass sidekick. Hes the guy you put in a series with a goofy lead character. This way, the viewers that want to watch a cool guy, can get their fix and not be too annoyed with the silly lead character.

Zoro does nothing that a loyal "cool guy" from other shounen series wouldnt do.
That´s true tbh. He´s no different than sasuke, vegeta or killua.

Crazy part is the people you named are far more developed than zoro.

Episode one killua and vegeta are completely different half way through their respective series. Both having gone through multiple personal moments that shape them.

*Vegeta losing to the man responsible for killing his entire race, and feeling so helpless that he begs goku (someone he looks down on) to defeat him. Even takes pride in goku. Then he learns to call earth home and even starts a family and intends to protect the earth. Then has a father son emotional moment followed by him acknowledging that goku is better than him. Then he sacrifices himself for the earth.

*killua killed without hesitation any time he was annoyed. Managed to make a friend and tried to turn his life around, only for his family to tear him away from that dream. He managed to break free and he firmly followed a no killing rule which he only broke when fighting against the ants. He went against the deeply ingrained teaching/hypnosis of his family and was willing to stand and fight to the death for his friends. And finally cut ties with his family at the end of the election arc.

Oda gave zoro 2 dope moments. "Nothing happened" showed that zoro was willing to go back on his word to "kill luffy if he got in the way of his dream" and him bowing to mihawk showed much of the same. That was 12 years ago.

Not even close. Zolo is an underling and he is happy with his underling position under Luffy, Sasuke and Vegeta are not, they are most of the time weaker especially Vegeta (Sasuke could be more consistent with his rivalry) but they try to compete and wouldn't accept to be underling by choice.

Thus they are more important characters than Zolo.

Zoro sucks outside of fighting.

Zoro has character development
His relationship with Luffy changed dramatically after being defeated by Mihawk, culminating in a thriller bark with his sacrifice. Also for the sake of the team, he stepped over his pride and asked Mihawk to train him.
There are also small developmental moments where he learned the lesson given to him by Mihawk about estimating the strength of an enemy or only cutting what he needs after the fight with Daz Bones using the blunt side of the sword on those he doesn't want to kill.
His flashback with Kuina is also enough to explain his motivation.
We know what motivated him to become the strongest swordsman and why it is so important for him to do so.
Of course, all these moments were just Pre TS and after we only got Zoro who is more serious due to defeat on saobodi and accepting himself as King in the 1033-1035 chapter.
I can't call Zoro a genius or an absolutely complete character, but he certainly can't be called bad.
Is he overrated and are there better characters in One Piece? Yes
Is he bad on his own? No

Though I agree that Zoro fans have no leg to stand on when complaining about Luffy I don't agree with the idea that Zoro hasn't changed at all

His development as a member of the crew and a loyal righthand makes chapter 10 Zoro and chapter 1071 Zoro different. Thriller Bark did a lot for Zoro character wise

I wouldn't say he's changed much since then though... which is why I find it funny when Zoro fans of all people complain about Luffy
