So yeah did mihawk ever try and challenge the big mom?
Assuming he didn’t get the wss title from below 1 billion berry shanks he’s probably tried fighting other characters
So thinking of the active sword users post Roger’s death there’s
- 2 arms but less than a billion berry shanks. Mihawk refusing to fight him with 1 arm
- Bogard?
- Shiki disappeared
- Rayleigh disappeared
- King who’s usually in wano or with kaido
- Oden who was in wano a place mihawk hasn’t been
- Shiryu who was in impel down if I remember correctly
- Vista who mihawk didn’t fight
- Smoothie who likely mainly stays in tottoland
- Cracker same as smoothie but more so
- Aramaki was possibly in prison and relatively unknown to the world
- Issho also relatively unknown to the world
That pretty much means the strongest active person that uses a sword was Linlin. Anyone else you can argue about being stronger than her is either dead or inactive. Mihawk not going after them is one thing but not going after her would be crazy unless he doesn’t view her as a swordsman
At the same time regardless of whether or not he thinks she’s a swordsman I do think it’s likely he went after her. Only because it fits the theory that the main cross guild members lost their drive in connection to the original pre timeskip emperors

We know he isn’t trying to be the strongest blade or meito user so he wouldn’t care if a knife or scythe user was stronger than him
Besides big mom and whitebeard both characters we know mihawk didn’t defeat I guess there’s Bogard aka Garp’s Rayleigh/king. We know mihawk use to be known as marine hunter in the past. Bogard really being the only notable guy with a sword
It’s definitely possible he fought Aramaki or Issho in the past but they were again relatively unknown. It’s even likely that they only received their fruits after joining the marines/wg

- Best case scenario him being stronger than shanks 13+ years ago gave him the title
- At worst he only hit the title because shanks lost his arm and it’s basically a default consolation prize for mihawk

And at that shanks was probably the only contender left that's why they kept on fighting.

It's like roger / wb dynamics. They fought a lot but none came out victorious.
Whitebeard had the strongest fruit + supreme grade sword + Supreme king Haki. While roger hot pirate king title.
Similarly Mihawk got WSS and Shanks got emperor Title.
And at that shanks was probably the only contender left that's why they kept on fighting.

We don’t know the characters Mihawk fought because Oda did not take the time to dwell into Mihawk’s past yet.
And it is very likely that the people he fought were not introduce yet in the story.
Fujitora, Loki and Greenbull existence prove that Oda has no issue to introduce new top tier characters or to have top tier characters living out of the Gran Line.
