It's not "new", there have been references to the Underworld, hell, a spiritual world, an afterlife, magic etc since like east blue and paradise. Oda may or may not have the rules to these things worked out ahead of time, but they've been around in the lore for a long time.
One thing One Piece pretty much never does is explain how a power system works in detail. Where Togashi will make a whole arc based solely on explaining how Nen works, Oda will wait until 500+ chapters in to give the most basic and incomplete possible summary of haki and then leave it open. Call it a flaw if you want.
I think Haki, DFs, Soul, Magic, whatever, probably all have comprehensive details on how they work, they're just not in the manga.

haki is like the simplest possible power system in the world so its funny ppl struggle to understand it so hard. its just mental, physical, and spiritual buffs or projection. late op will probably have observation projecting fake attacks into people's perception to overwhelm them, armament haki buffing other people at range the way the kuja coat arrows, haki projectiles etc
The problem is not understanding, the problem is not knowing when what haki is being used.
I for once never noticed Goofy using new CoA haki on the roof after chapter 1000. His attacks looked exactly the same as they looked before Udon training arc. There's literally 0 indication of him using any kind of haki unless a character says so.
Not even gonna mention all those autistic advCoC lightning debates.
It's the most dogshit system in fiction.
It's just:
-react better
-punch hard
-punch harder
and somehow this lazy turd author still failed to expand and show it
