Character Discussion Is Nami still the 3rd main protagonist of One Piece or is it Sanji now?

What is the core trio of modern One Piece?

I think Luffy, Nami and Sanji have the most panels in the series?

Zoro and Sanji are both extremely important to Oda.

I would lean towards Luffy, Zoro and Sanji if it had to be a trio, but I don't think Oda's sees it that way at all.

The side characters are the main protagonists, its all Oda seems to care about. Side characters over plot development for the main SH's. I'm so ready for the endgame to just be here so I can see how Oda wraps up the final war.

I prefer the side characters, and most of the main characters besides a couple already got their entire stories told, we know everything we need to know about Luffy, Sanji, Zoro, Jinbe, Robin, Usopp and it's the side characters that keep the story moving and interesting, their backstories, the different abilities the stories they weave together that makes one piece such a good story, I don't think One piece would of reached the levels that it did if Oda focused primarily on the main characters and left the side characters with no real development or purpose

Unfortunately, Sabo has been written to be the biggest side protagonist of post-TS”
Sabo could be yea if Oda delivers. He just hasn't been on panel enough. So far it's Law and it's not even all that close, he was moving mountains since the start of postskip, he initiated the Yonkou saga and he also ended it.

And if his role is linked to EOS then he will be the runaway side protagonist all things considered.

Law is the deuteragonist in the post-ts, biggest contributor in the yonko saga. Takes a backseat now but will play a major role in the final battle. Will of D fighter, and immortality surgery plot lines. There’s a reason why Oda ensured that Law’s fate wasn’t vague after fighting BB and even highlighted him in this panel.

Notice anything? Yup, those are the only strong D clan fighters introduced in the story that will still be active going into the final stretch (except for Ace). There’s no Vivi, Clover or other shit thrown in there.

He really is the Kakashi of One Piece in terms of having his fingerprints all over the major events and characters. If he comes back and plays a major role at EOS then his time away will only be a little blip when looking at the New World section of One Piece.

The first three to join. Two males and one female are the usual staple trio of Shonen series. You can also pull from a ton of supplementary info that supports these 3 as being the cores.

"Luffy, Zoro, and Nami. For now, all the triggers are gathered. That's what I think — that's what this drawing is for me."

^ Oda's author comment from Color Walk 1, which Usopp and Sanji were also featured in, but Oda didn't say anything about them like this.

Has there ever been a counter to this?
