Character Discussion Top 5 worst written characters

How is a garbage tier character like Hancock not badly written lol
I don’t think she’s badly written. I don’t see the evidence for it. You’re welcome to make the argument.

I hate just about all of Oda’s choices regarding G5, but I don’t consider any of it bad writing.

Bad writing is structural. It’s substantive. Aesthetically unappealing structures can nevertheless be exceptionally well designed.

I honestly struggle to name a badly written character in One Piece.
Maybe post-timeskip Chopper is one of the more questionable ones.

I’m not a big fan of Sabo either. His existence feels like pure fanservice, and he kind of cheapened the Revolutionary Army. By introducing a young character with a strong emotional link to Luffy, Oda took the easy route in handling that faction. But that’s just my personal take, it’s not really a flaw in the writing. Even though I don’t connect with the character at all, I can recognize that he’s appealing to many readers.

Another one is Kid. Honestly, he could’ve been replaced by pretty much anyone else. I’ve never really understood what’s supposed to make him compelling. When he showed up at Sabaody, he seemed like the most interesting Supernova, and then he basically faded into nothing. Bland personality, predictable, repetitive. It’s hard to empathize with him because you’re never really given anything solid about who he is. There’s a huge gap between the role he plays in the story and the actual depth put into his character.

King is another one I find boring. Feels like an idea thrown in with barely any development. In terms of character writing, I think he’s completely forgettable. You could sum him up in two panels. Again, not a “badly written” character per se, but considering his role, Oda barely even tried. Among the many right-hand men we’ve seen in One Piece (from Mr. 1 onward), I think he compares poorly to basically all of them.

So I’d say post-timeskip Chopper, Sabo, Kid, and King. Can’t really think of any others.

Sabo is good but yeah he could be written better honestly.
I think it's just a matter of Oda barely showing us how the Rev Army works.

Crydo
Yamato
Big Meme in Wano
Smoothie
King
Smoothie isn't even badly written she just isn't written at all
Literally she has no feats or cool moments she doesn't even have a personality Oda just made her for fanservice at that point
Fucker couldn't knock down a wooden door and she's the second strongest excluding Big Mom
Also Kaido is a good villain though

Mentions of Hody seem insane since he's clearly designed to do what he's meant to do thematically.

Mentions of Smoothie are like getting up in arms over characters like Buffalo or Nero.

There's not nearly enough there for those characters to warrant critique. They're not poorly written, they're not dedicated enough space to be counted as written.

Imu takes the number #1 spot easily, he is so painfully generic.

Kid is a big waste of space.

Hody is just a lame budget Arlong.

Dishonorable mention is post-skip Zoro, he kinda became just your average cool loyal badass, I hope he gets some actual character development in the future.

Smoothie deserves it because she has expectations unlike the bums you mentioned.

Kaido is an extremely underrated villain, he was built-up to be a generic unstoppable juggernaut type of character, yet he ended up being much more than that, he actually has a sense of honor and respect as well as some interesting quirks.

In terms of aura and intro, most OP characters don't even come close.
