I'm not going to claim an admiral chose death over not causing colleteral damage, but it's fully possible he started the fight holding back for the same reason as Aramaki and Issho and took injuries that nerfed him afterward.

...Except if Xebec killed him because he had to hold back that much, then yes, he chose death over not causing collateral damage.
