He kinda did abandon them though. Or at the very least, he was absent in their lives and they had to deal with differing kinds of ostracization from the people of Elbaf whenever he wasn't around to play chaperone.

I mean one of his kids literally tried to kill himself because he felt lonely and unloved. Doesn't speak well of their caretakers.

But it kinda reads the same way Dragon is to Luffy; like ya, maybe he's not a *bad* father but he sure as shit didn't do much to raise him and it reflects in that Luffy doesn't give a shit about him or thinks of him as much of a father.
