10/10 Pre-ts he was one of the best, smart, chevaleresque, excellent design, excellent backstory, 007esque and superb fighting style.
0/10 post-ts, he has none of the qualities above and can't even fight anymore, always being hypetooled.
Overall 5/10 character

I like his smarts and him adding depth to some of the SHP fights like Mr.Prince moment. He was also downright awesome in Water7/Enies lobby, that fight when Sanji used knives was both a funny and a badass moment for him, and him encouraging Usopp was a really great moment as well.

So yeah, just like the majority here, I do enjoy Sanji pre-TS, but I also can't help but root for Sanji post-TS as well, as I remember his potential and I do like rooting for underdogs - and let's face it, with the recent portrayal, Sanji is def an underdog of a "crouching moron, hidden badass" with a sprinkle of butt-monkey variety, suffering from overused gags and lacking feats compared to golden boi Luffy or Mr. Cool Zoro.

So yeah, I still like Sanji even though sometimes being Sanji's fan is a pain due to Oda's constant abuse of the character and certain toxic fanbases.

Similar to everyone here I like him because he’s chivalrous and knows how to cook while also being incredibly strong

But for me I think another major reason why I like him is his weird position in the story. If you think about it Sanji is an “other” amongst the Strawhats and sticks out like a sore thumb narratively

In a shonen you typically either have a duo that takes precedence over everyone else (like Goku and Vegeta) or a trio containing the MC, the deuteragonist, and the heroine/relevant female character (Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura)

Now in One Piece you’d assume it’s one or the other but it’s neither. Sanji isn’t the Sakura, or any other character that’s had their role clearly defined in any other series. Sanji is an entirely different thing altogether

Luffy is the protagonist, Zoro is the deuteragonist, and Nami is the heroine so you’d think Sanji wouldn’t fit in anywhere, right? Yet that’s clearly not true

He’s his own unique existence. It feels very intentional to me that Oda put Luffy, Zoro, and Nami in the cover page for chapter 1000 but then went on to put Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji on the cover of volume 100. Two huge milestones that were celebrated with two completely different characters

It feels like Oda took the concept of a “number 3” and split them in 2. Creating the Romance Dawn Trio and the Monster Trio

And even within the Monster Trio Sanji is the odd man out. He isn’t a Supernova, he doesn’t have a legendary mentor, he doesn’t have a legendary figure from hundreds of years ago that he’s directly compared to (Sora is a small possibility but he doesn’t have a tangible one yet)

That’s honestly the main reason why I find it so much more interesting to discuss Sanji than Luffy even though Luffy’s my favorite character in fiction. With a character like Luffy or even Zoro it feels like their paths have been set in stone

You know Luffy’s gonna become the Pirate King and surpass everyone while unlocking almost every powerup imaginable, you know Zoro’s gonna become the World’s Strongest Swordsman while surpassing every swordsman and making his blades black, you know all that.

For Sanji you can’t map out or predict anything because his story hasn’t been written or heavily foreshadowed since the beginning. He’s a walking question mark! Just these past few weeks there have been numerous arguments and threads discussing whether Sanji will unlock conqueror’s haki or not. The answer? No one knows!

That’s what makes him so entertaining! Oda can do anything with him

I will say sanji is what if scenario to zoro. Zoro follows traditional path of strength. He has a solid objective of becoming WSS and follows that path. Sanji's path necessarily is not that of strength but that of being a cook and yet he is second only to luffy and zoro and at eos will not be that below zoro.

That’s honestly a great way of explaining exactly how I feel as well

He’s like a glitch in the matrix. A mere cook yet he’s still handled like a primary combatant and driving force of the crew (one of the wings)

He’s multifaceted

Fuck Sanji, he made us go through the worst arc in the series, death penalty wouldnt be enough for putting us through WCI.
Still not as bad as Zoro giving us Axe Hand morgan
Post automatically merged:

Luffy is for kids
Zoro is for boys
Sanji is for men " fk that training all day and finding the One Piece bs where the ladies at!!! "
exactly

I think he is Oda's favorite Strawhat because compared to the others, there's never an arc where he is "just there". It is insane how much love Oda gives to this MF, compared to characters like Usopp.

That being said, a big portion of his fans are annoying with their Zoro inferiority complex.
Oda has love-hate relationship with Sanji
I mean, on one hand, how many SHP got not one, but two sad flashbacks and so much focus?
On another hand, Oda keeps forcing way too many gags at Sanji's expense...
