I started One Piece with chapter 100, which was volume 12 iirc. I still remember that first panel of angry Buggy under the rain lol.
I quickly fell in love with the story and kept reading it ever since (of course I catched up with the prior 11 volumes first).
Anyway, the point is that I've been reading this story for a long time now. I grew with it.
I was still pretty much a kid when volume 51 came out, which was kind of a turning point for me. Some characters were already sealed in my heart of course: the SHs, Rob Lucci, Smoker, Doflamingo (with his brief appearances)...
But when I got my hands on volume 51, saw all the Supernovas and actually met them by reading the volume, it's like my thrill for the story grew even higher for some reason.
To this day I think it was because these pirates, who were just as mighty as our loved protagonists, made the story more
organic. More
real.
The fact that the Going Merry, and later the Thousand Sunny, wasn't the only pirate ship sailing through the waves of the Grand Line and causing havoc in its way intrigued me a lot. The fact that these pirates made a name for themselves just like Luffy, by following different paths, made the One Piece world so much larger to me.
And I know that today a part of the community "settles" the Supernovas matter as "a random addition forced by editors" but they were much more than that from the start!! I remember well that I wasn't the only one in the community feeling like that... in fact Oda integrated all of them in the story. I think he himself grew fond of them.
Anyways, out of all this bunch, Eustass Kidd is the one that stood out the most to me for a combination of design, character, powers and bounty. I had the gut feeling that this one was a bit different from the others.
Jumping forward, I felt the same thrill when Oda was giving us updates on what the Supernovas were doing in the New World (with Drake attacking one of Kaido's islands, Hawkins facing Brownbeard and so on...). That was the first glimpse Oda was giving us of the New World, which was still this mysterious and crazy place that had no mercy for nobody (we can confirm it today).
And even here Kidd occupied a special spot for me: it was the first real time I felt like we were actually approaching these new waters and starting a new era... Kidd captured perfectly what I was expecting in the journey ahead of us.
That moment kinda sealed it for me. I started looking forward to Kidd journey just as much as I was looking forward to the SHs reunion.
Hearing about him from time to time (i.e. in FMI when we heard Emperors officers mentioning the Kidd Pirates crushing their ships or Brulee saying that Kidd had invaded Big Mom's territory) was a confirmation for me: not all pirates are getting crushed in the New World, a few talents are kicking and holding their ground.
Shaping this era.
During the events of Punk Hazard, we saw Kidd calling a meeting in his hideout with the intention of forming a pirate-alliance with Apoo & Hawkins, familiar faces from volume 51... The very concept of a pirate alliance was facinating to me because it's a reminescence of what real world pirates used to do (we all saw it in other franchises too, like Pirates of the Caribbean for example).
On top of that Oda showed us (without telling) how Kidd spent the last 2 years putting in the work: scars on his face, a mechanical arm replacing the missing one, the estabilished connections with the underground market... hell, even a personal base of operations!
We later learned he lost his arm in a fight against Beckman and got a Road Poneglyph after defeating Snack. Again: a
dynamic character that moved through the mighty waters of the One Piece narrative.
I remember the time of Kaido's reveal.
Everyone was hyped for Kaido's epic introduction but I was so invested in Kidd's pirate alliance at that point that I was mostly worried for him lmao. When we later saw him bloody and locked in Kaido's cell, it was a shock at first glance, but today it is possibly my favorite panel of Eustass "Captain" Kidd... because it perfectly shows his main characteristic: he is UNBREAKABLE. He ended in that cell only after he was left alone by his "allies" and fought until he couldn't move anymore, even showing Kaido his Conqueror spirit.
Finally, Wano was the pivotal point.
Seeing all the parallels and interaction with Luffy, the sufference of his crew (it's in Wano that I really started to appreciate Killer, the GOAT) and the way they were ready to sail all the way to Onigashima by themselves just to spit in Kaido's face... pure masterclass.
If you really think about it we rarely saw characters with such boldness.
Enough boldness to go from being one of the intriguing pirates that reached Sabaody to being one of the 5 leaders of an entire era (together with Luffy, Law, Zoro and Killer, his vice captain).
Enough boldness to not lose a single drop of his own soul just before sending Big Mom straight to hell.
One of the few Great Pirates really worthy of the race for the One Piece.
I mean, just go look at him, Luffy and Law arguing on the route to take after defeating 2 Emperors of the Sea and then go look at those 3 standing in front of the Human Auction House 2 years before.
It's self explenatory to me.
After this read (and knowing my stance, for those who've known me on the forum for a while) you can imagine how hard it was for me to see Kidd and Killer on the brink of death right near the shore of Elbaf, and the Victoria Punk being completely destroyed (fuck Dorry & Broggy).
Not a great time to be a Kidd fan lol, not denying that.
But I've been reading this story for a long, long time and I know Kidd's adventure are not finished yet: he'll have a great comeback.
He'll have it exactly because of the characteristics he has always had since that very first meeting in Sabaody.
He's bold, ambitious, stubborn and annoyingly tough.
He's a Pirate amongst pirates.
Unbreakable.
Call me delusional if you want, I don't care, but time will tell you.
Chances are, by the end of this story, you'll like him too
This is the hill I'm dying on.
