Kaido's character focus is racism. I recently read a fantastic read thread regarding this:
All of the Beast Pirates are Races the WG has most likely hunted and enslaved, like with Kuma.
Honestly, there's a good chance Kaido recruited Kuma, since he's a Buccaneer. Kaido knew Rocks and knows a lot about history, Kaido knows who the Buccaneers are.
Kaido went as far as to tell Yamato that it's impossible for Oni and Humans to be friends. When we first see Kaido, he's 10 in his flashback: 10 years is a long time, especially in One Piece.
So, we know from One Piece that there's more Sky Islands than just Skypiea and Birka.
Balloon Terminal being a fan favorite location, since it's, A: Just ridiculous, and, B: The first time we see Kaido in action.
I believe that the Oni Tribe was once a part of Elbaph, and were Ancient Giants: but, their section of Sky Island was separated from Elbaph during the Void Century.
As a result, the Oni eventually shrank in size, being unable to eat enough/not living in a climate that could support their size. Because of this, their entire history was war based: the Oni were forced to fight each other for food 24/7. The weak died, the strong lived.
Kaido's Mom was very strong, the Queen of the Oni.
We know Harald was researching history/trying to bridge the gaps between nations. It makes all the sense in the world that Harald hunted down the Oni Race to try to learn from them/teach them.
Harald fell in love with Kaido's Mother due to her strength and wild nature, and Harald promised to return one day.
However, something else happened: Kaido's Mom became pregnant.
The other Oni weren't stupid: they knew that if Kaido's Mom gave birth to a child with Ancient Giant genetics, they would
A: Eat too much food.
B: Be too dangerous to control.
So, they tried to kill Kaido's mom, but failed. Eventually, after Kaido was born, he was kidnapped, and his mother died trying to rescue him.
After, Kaido went mad with rage, and slaughtered the entirety of the Oni people. This is why Kaido believes Oni cannot exist with other races: because Kaido's mixed-race heritage as an Oni/Giant is why his mother died.
Then, Kaido gained his hobby: suicide.
No people. No mother. Nothing but a blood soaked Sky Island.
So?
He jumped. And landed in the Vodka Kingdom, still alive. After being used as a tool of war, Kaido came to realize that humans would only look at him as a Beast.
So, he built his crew up out of persecuted/enslaves non-traditional Humanoid species.
Eventually, Harald returned to the Sky Island where he had met Kaido's mom... and found a wasteland of skeletons.
Disgusted by the barbarism, and his own crimes as a youth, Harald ripped his horns out, while weeping over the bones of Kaido's mother.
This is why Kaido loves Joy Boy: Kaido wants to be viewed as a Being, not a Beast. Kaido wanted to BE Joy Boy, hence why he recruits persecuted Tribes.
But, Kaido's racist past clouded his mind, and made him hate humans, when Joy Boy is meant to unite everyone.
IMO, Ida and Kaido's mother dying is what's going to change Harald from the fun-loving dude we know now, to the more series, hornless face we saw later.
All three of his wives died in horrible ways. Bonus tragedy points if Ida was killed while Harald was discovering Kaido's Mother's fate.
