@Gol D. Roger funnily enough I’d say if we’re just talking themes (freedom vs oppression, dreams, will to action, the ambiguity of justice, etc) the most important characters are Luffy, Koby, Teach, and Imu who all also happen to be the central characters in the contender spread

May be, but what counts as a theme and what doesn't is definitely a matter discussion. Coby has done jack shit to move the plot so far. Just appearing at important events isn't the same as moving the plot. And I don't think just being one of the first to be associated with the MC counts as thematic importance, nor does sharing panels with important characters elevate your importance. The the story is literally about SH Pirates journey, so saying some random character is more important than them just because he met Luffy on day-1 is kinda crazy.
Sure, the characters that move the plot are important, but we gotta remember they're just the tools being used to progress the story that revolves around the SH Pirates.
