The weirdest thing about Kaido, and a part I think really ties him together, is his alcoholism. I know it’s a Shonen manga so ideas like his suicidality and alcoholism can’t become too crushing, but it paints a picture of a really empty, broken man who’s only pound of pride was his strength. He always wanted to be the kind of leaders he saw around him and heard in legend… joyboy, Rocks, Rodger, Whitebeard, even Big Mom, but in the end he knew his only redeeming quality was his strength. Hence needing to start a global war to “prove” himself. I think this all comes together when we learn just how much he wanted to be Joyboy… and that deep down he knew he wasn’t. In a way he’s Oda’s darkest, most internally broken character, but we never got that flashback that tied all these ideas together into a single picture because Oda was in a rush to finish Wano and had already given us everything we needed to put to together ourselves.
