We do. Croc being a warlord during this era is a confirmed fact in the manga as crocodile was already in Alabasta at this time and he became a warlord years before he moved to Alabasta.
So my guess is somewhere along the line Roger told Shanks about the Sun God Nika and how the government is trying to get their hands on it.
Shanks started off as a pirate and perhaps got Intel the WG were actively looking for the Nika Nika fruit. Knowing his connections to the Figerland family he used it to deceive the WG and join the holy knights (all the while his crew waited).
Shanks knowing the best way to get a hold of it is waiting for the world government to find it and once they did he would then steal it.
This seems like the likely chain of events as to why Shanks did what he did. The freeing the slaves side of things might just be because he wanted to create chaos etc or because he was sick of seeing slaves be mistreated.
The next part is tricky... Either Shanks travelled to East Blue to find Ace to give him the fruit or fate intervened and Luffy ate it but Shanks realised that Luffy was the next sun god because of the words he used which mirrored Rogers. Hence the reason Shanks sacrificed his arm for Luffy.
All in all the only thing I have against this is how dumb the WG seem. Like no one in their right mind would just trust an ex Roger pirate member to just join the highest defence group in the world government in such a short period of time. Even then with the chain of events such as the slaves being freed Shanks would and should definitely be the prime suspect.
Yes,i think many people in the Roger pirates, and even Whitebeard, believed that Ace would be the new Joy Boy. But,both Shanks and later Whitebeard when they met Luffy realized he was the real deal Joy Boy-wise.
I also think maybe Roger believed that Shanks could have been Joy Boy,thats why he gave him the Strawhat, but after Laugh Tale he realized that Shanks could not be Joy Boy, because they were too early of around 20 years, and thats why Shanks was crying
entire god valley incident was ass, glad to see such a good chapter finally. The closer we get to going back to the present the better the chapters will be, like the ones when we started this flashback. In one month everyone will forget Rocks and Harald. Now it's Wanks and Woki time.
Chapter 0 isn’t canon to me because it came out before Marineford, and up until Marineford the concept of haki and power levels still wasn’t clearly defined.
Shiki was basically flattering Whitebeard and saying that it was his era, which obviously puts Whitebeard above him. And by that logic, it would mean that Whitebeard, being stronger than Shiki and portrayed that way by Oda, would push Garp and Sengoku into even greater difficulty.
He went from supposedly having a huge "high diff" over Garp and Sengoku to being defeated by pre–timeskip Luffy. Being that strong, it makes no sense. I don’t know how Oda would allow someone on Roger’s level to be defeated by pre–timeskip Luffy. It only shows how lost he was at the time.

Something funny
These two scenes are ONE page apart
Oda is fine drawing Shiki in some cool doublespread with the OG yonko next to WB but respect him too much to draw him as Garp's hype tool. Is this what they mean by relevance scaling? @Sir Yasheen

Man movie shiki had age hit him like a truck, no, 100 BattleShip size trucks for him to be Peak Pretimeskip Luffy level.

Anyways, I honestly feel like calling shanks a "rar" or a "snitch" outside if agenda talking is kind of wrong? I mean in the literally sense he WOULD be a rat to the WG (A good thing might I add).
It's because he's hardly relevant to the story so people scale him based on this. Personally I don't think it has any bearing on his PL. People been coping over Shiki's PL for so long they were claiming Garp is a fraud for a long time, now that Garp is clearly mean to be ~ Roger they have to scale Whiki accordingly.
Why would I be? There’s no indication that Kaidou ever clashed with Roger after God Valley, but there is for Shiki, right?
And what we get from that instance is that Shiki couldn’t even draw his fight with Roger to be considered his equal — he ended up with a steering wheel stuck in his head.
Kaidou never fought Roger, so no, Kaidou is exempt. If he had confronted Roger, then you’d actually have an argument.
To make it clearer, any pirate who never fought Roger still has the chance to prove they can match him. Those who did fight him and didn’t receive that kind of portrayal have no one claiming that people simply failed to recognize them as his equals. They just didn’t reach that status.
I don’t know, what I do know is that Garp and Roger fought many times to the death. Whitebeard and Roger ended in a draw on panel, with Buggy saying he’s the only man to ever match Roger, and the narrator later confirming the same in Marineford. And Shiki… well, he ended up with a steering wheel stuck in his head, and nobody thinks he’s Roger’s equal. In Chapter 0 itself he’s practically kissing Roger’s ass harder than anyone has ever done in this manga.
Oh yes, I almost forgot, he was also a sycophant of Whitebeard.
If there were at least one living soul saying that this guy could tie with Roger, that he was equal to Roger, even possessing at least one instance of him clashing with Roger, I would understand, but even with that instance, that portrayal doesn't exist.
