Break Week Crackpot Theory - Come see my run-on sentences!:
We never really hear what is actually engraved on the poneglyphs, we know that Robin reads them, interprets them, and just tells Luffy what he needs to know. He doesn't seem to care about the details, but there is one poneglyph that you just know he's going to want to hear when its read aloud - the one on Laugh Tale, where his predecessor Gol. D. Roger became the pirate king!
We are being lead to believe that the Poneglyphs are written about: Joyboy, the void century, specific directions to important things and locations, and that they were written by allies of Joyboy, and then were subsequently scattered by Lily D Nefertari much to the chagrin of Imu, maybe the particulars shouldn't really matter to us - as they don't seem to matter to Luffy either - but we know that the last group who showed up on the Island, and actually gave it the name Laugh Tale after their visit, was Gol D. Rogers crew, save for Buggy and Shanks, who had Odin along with them, who could read poneglyphs, he read the one on the final hidden island that could only be reached by exploring the entire world and learning presumably at least a few of its greatest secrets to the crew, and when the crew heard the tale, they laughed, named the island Laugh Tale, disbanded their crew, and the captain of the crew ended his life in a FLASHY way, inspiring the future generations to take to the sea. The crew, collectively, all decided after hearing the contents of this poneglyph that they were too early, and that they should not share the information they learned with the world.
What kind of joke, are you not going to share?
Dr. Vegapunk inquired why the crew didn't share what they learned during his broadcast. We don't exactly know the reason why yet, but we do know that Rayleigh has a few thoughts on the matter, when he was listening to the dearly departed professor, he lamented that Vegapunk Prime might ruin it for the youngsters - strange, but, when discussing the void century, and the contents of the poneglyphs, including the one on Laugh Tale with the Mugiwara crew on Saboady Island, he told Robin that: Even if he were to tell them the entire history here and now, ..., the conclusion that they'll reach might be different from what the Roger Pirates found.
Rayleigh believes that Luffy and his crew may interpret the meaning of the poneglyphs or specifically the final poneglyph differently than the Roger Pirates did. He doesn't want to unduely influence the way Luffy, the chosen one, and his chosen crew forms their understanding of the true history of the world. He doesn't want to share the joke, or ruin the punchline. Is it because Luffys observation haki is good at or tuned towards interpreting feelings and the Laugh tale joke would feel/hit him differently? Or is it just because he thinks... differently?
I believe that the joke on that final poneglyph is written in a specific way by Joyboys crew, who were used to dealing with him, to communicate directly and covertly with the next Nika fruit eater (which we have been led to believe can either resist who is in possession of it, or wants to try to choose its bearer - perhaps it chooses those with similar characteristics, thought patterns or sense of humour to its original inspiration, or perhaps it influences the user to cause those changes to behave or think a certain way) what he needs to do/say/shapeshift-into, in order to succeed this time around in order to 'win' using the 'One Piece' during the final ninja war - when the Laugh Tale poneglyph gets read to Luffy, while his crew may react the same way Gol D. Rogers did, I don't think Luffy will be laughing, he may have understood it differently than Rogers Crew who didn't have what it took to go the distance VS Imu, and will instead be focused on his fated mission for the first and final time, maybe we'll see the mean looking Red Eyed Gear 5 form again - Believe it!
Theory TD;DR:
Luffy won't find the joke on Laugh Tale funny, as it's a covert message created specifically to give information to someone with his specific and strange brand of intellect.
