It's not the simping that's the issue for me. It's the presentation of it.
I agree that Roger falling for Shakky is a good way to differentiate him from Luffy. The problem is that there's no way to look past
this shit:
Flat on his ass with hearts in eyes, tf? This is just unsubtle and doesn't really fit the image or character of Roger that was seen so far imo esp. pre-Oden.
Which is my biggest issue with WB as well; him going heart eyes for Shakky is dumb, him acting like a massive tsundere about her fits way better to me.
(Hell it's the issue I have with even
Sanji, I'd like his gag way more if it was toned down more and not ridiculous nosebleed bs)
A good way that Oda gives Roger some character is here:
Or here:
I like this sort of thing. Gives Roger a very good distinct vibe of his own, and doesn't make him a clown for it.
If Roger showed a similar attitude towards Shakky I could dig it even if done humorously. Like overdramatic flirting, or trying to impress her with tales of his adventures while trying to capture her for e.g ig.
I'll also finish up by saying that some characters
should have aura. Legendary figures like Roger, Yonko, Admirals, other great marines and pirates etc should have a limit on how much clowning they get, especially if they've been depicted as serious before.
Past a certain point it goes from fun character building and just makes them look unimpressive.
