All of this to chase a prophecy thinking it excuses all his actions and throwing everyone underneath the bus... for him not to be the one the prophecy was talking about.
Targaryens, a few atleast were always insane and obsessed with prophercies. Though some theory do say Three eyed Raven influenced both Arys and Rhaegar actions.

I wouldn't call him a fraud though.

Singlehandedly led to the deaths of everyone he "loved" and the doom of his entire house.
I might have been with you up until this point lol. Aerys was a mad dog and House Targaryen’s fall was definitely 95% on him. Lol

Idk I don’t like the word “fraud” for Rhaegar but yeah his actions did lead to the fall of his house, but I still blame Aerys for the most part. Aerys was the reason that actual war broke out, not Rhaegar.

Lol I did get carried over by my hate for Rhaegar but you're right. Thing is, Aerys' head was gone and everyone acknowledged it but Rhaegar was still seen as the symbol of hope by the Targaryen loyalists and yet he knowingly ignored that and did a political suicide knowing the aftereffects it will cause and knowing the nature of his dad. He knew that the Starks would come to the king for their daughter and Aerys will not react it to well because of his madness.

Which is kinda why he's more disappointing. He was so talented and charismatic that everyone was willing to ignore tyranny because they had hopes he'd be a good king and he just commits the dumbest thing possible. He let em down.

Also, going on a tangent, it's kinda sad how Aerys ended up the way he did. Dude was genuinely a decent dude (apart from his relationship with Rhaella) and a good king. The Defiance of Duskendale really sent his Targaryen Madness into a frenzy

Well once upon a time Aerys was a young and respected talent like Rhaegar, we don’t get much in the way of actual achievements from him but during the last Blackfyre Rebellion, Aerys won the respect of a lot of future lords like Tywin and he was well liked by the knights of the realm.

I think Rhaegar was similar to Aerys in that way, but the hints of Rhaegar’s madness were always there. There were hints that he was a follower of the Lord of Light which is not the most sane of religions lol.

Anyway OT: Rhaegar “kidnapping” Lyanna was definitely controversial, but only Aerys’s murder of the Starks could have actually sparked realm-wide war. More controversial things have happened than Rhaegar and Lyanna but Aerys nearly lead the entire realm to destroy itself lol.

I think even a half decent King could have handled the whole Rhaegar thing well enough to not cause war to break out. Aegon the Conqueror himself had multiple wives, a decent King could have convinced the realm that this was just an old Targaryen tradition and that Rhaegar should be allowed to take a second wife as well. The Baratheons would have been pissed, but just promise Robert a Targaryen bride lol. Rhaegar had a daughter and Danaerys herself came about eventually so it’s not unreasonable to promise Robert a female Targaryen within his lifetime lol. And Robert alone being pissed about Lyanna wouldn’t have lead to Robert’s rebellion lol.

Even if House Baratheon would have for some reason rebelled, it took the Starks, Arryn’s, Baratheons, and ultimately Lannisters to destroy the realm, one house can’t do that alone lol.

Nah, I definitely blame Aerys for the Targaryen fall lol.
