No one's seriously saying that Mr.3 defeated them in direct combat or could take them in a straight fight

But factually they were embarrassed and would've been killed by Mr.3 of all characters

So it's hard for people to suspend their disbelief when D/B come back and are supposed to be these legendary fighters. People constantly bring up Shanks losing his arm to a Sea King and are only now maybe letting it go due to the Holy Knight seal explanation

That is fandom perception, but that’s why I said oda always respected them. Cause he refused to let them lose in a fair fight and when oda needed them defeated in Little Garden, he made sure to have them take themselves out.

Eh I guess if that's how you wanna put it. I don't really have a problem with it cause it proves that with the right tactics you can take out someone far stronger than you but at the same time it's an iffy look for two "legendary" guys

I think he did a great job repairing their image in Egghead though
