Character Discussion Nami's character and fandom expectations

Certain complains abour Nami's character doesnt make sense and I am not talking about just haters but her fans too

I think Nami fandom themselves have different expectation from Nami than how Oda wants to portray her.

Fandom wants Nami who is competent, mature, serious, gaurdian and perfect but thats how she has to behave since she was 8 years old like one of the adults.

When Luffy freed her, he gave her childhood back. Thats why now she is allowed to laugh, smile, cry, run, scream and act like a coward.

Why is Nami behaving so pathetic and asking for help even after 1120 chapters?

Because she can

Because she no longer has to carry burden of acting like adult.

Every arc and Every chapters
Nami's arc wasnt about becoming one of the leaders of crew and someone phyically strongest but its about becoming dumb Idiot like Luffy who likes adventure.
Thats the main theme of one piece too, We should all be Nika.

Of course when She needs to step up, she will

She can protect people like Zoro and can lead like Sanji but thats not core of Nami's character
Core of Nami's character has always been about becoming more carefree and childlike.
Someone who is obsessed with treasure and loves adventure. Basically what Luffy will call 'True Pirate'

Just like how Arlong stole Nami's childhood and some of her fans also wants to do same thing.

Thats all

Sounds reasonable. But I don't really have any expectations for One Piece characters right now. Oda will just choose the laziest way to deal with things, as Okama Razor rule explains. So it will be the same thing as immortality. Cool idea, but awful resolution. I mean, Genshin plot right now is just better than the whole Post Time Skip One Piece story. The last arc where something cool happened was the WCI arc, where Oda tried to make things more complicated. But again, that longed only to half of that arc, so yeah. I agree with you. We don't have to build expectations, so we wouldn't be disappointed. Especially if those expectations are something different from what Nami's character ever was.

I don't mind her being a bit silly or needing help, that's better than her being a boring invincible action type.

She comes in clutch a lot anyways and is a good character overall.

The one thing I can't stand is that annoying fucking gag where she beats people up for annoying her.

I'd find it funnier if she was the one on the receiving end every once in a while.

my only expectations for her are defeating miss bakkin, sir crocodile and maybe hina
Alright ngl I'm interested. Why Hina?

I personally have had no issues with any strawhat member so far. Reminder: it only gets toxic when you talk about power scaling. (What a surprise)

:milaugh:

I like the crew dynamic, it's authentic and fits. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses which are balanced out by each other. But, of course, I am not saying there aren't flaws in the manga as a whole.

By the way, Namis origin story is one of the most anticipated ones ever. Here are a few old threads that sparked interest.

Similarly, how we started to get glimpses of Brooks' true backstory outside Laboon and his Pirate Crew live in the recent chapters. The connection to Gunko etc.

This could also become relevant soon.

A good read, thanks for bringing that perspective!

Tbh I don't have any expectations of Nami, I am mostly annoyed at Oda when he has so little time to dedicate to SHP that when he does, they are reduced to their gag. Luckily, in Elbaph we had a lot more focus on them and it's not the case, at least in this arc. And Nami still gets some cool moments - her unwavering faith in Luffy in Wano was one of the few great moments that wretched arc had. I also liked how she stepped up in the latest chapters trying to put out the fire. And no, I was not annoyed at her struggling when being tied, it's realistic expectations, she's not super tough like Zoro, Luffy and Sanji, she does have superhuman sensitivity to climate events, but even in she fights, it's more about outsmarting her enemy than brute force. I don't even mind when Nami doesn't get a fight, because being a combatant is not who she is.

Hopefully Oda will keep giving the SHP enough focus so that they don't end up very flanderized versions of themselves.
