His beast form is not made for fighting human sized opponents but I doubt Oda would have made a big deal of the size if he was only going to draw it for fodder control

He was obviously using CoC on Egghead since it is factually less taxing than Gear 5. It made zero sense to be forced to use G5 which is on a strict time limit but hold back a less draining ability.
