Questions & Mysteries Why Has Oda Been Struggling with Tension and Competent Antagonist?

#21
In Elbaf Arc you have IMU/Gunko here along with 3 Holy Knights (who require Conquerors Haki to be put down) They should’ve been raising all kinds of Hell yet the tension is not there. The Antagonist play a big part in establishing tension in a story.

Egghead you had The Gorosei and Kizaru all present in the arc, yet the Strawhats leave that arc without a without a scratch, or mortal wound? lack of tension again despite all these strong characters here. An Admiral and All of the Gorosei were in that arc, The Gorosei all had Conquerors Haki as well.

Cause oda just wanted to waste time and having fun.

You listed the tension and stakes its just that there were solutions to those things. In Egghead the Strawhats were bailed out by Joyboy and Kizaru’s character is conflicted maybe even shifting away from an antagonist position the seeds are at least being sown. Wano is probably as dire as things have been but it was also time for Strawhats to grown into that yonko level crew that they have been building towards all timeskip. It isn’t a lack of stakes or tension because the Strawhats win or have opportunities to survive. Theres plenty of competent antagonists but again circumstances and other variables factor in. I feel like people just want them to just lose or die, theres plenty of stakes.

You half wrong about Egghead. Kizaru was tension enough. He even killed Vegapunk.

Shithats are all about to escape and survive an arc with the Finale villain in it and they’re barely a yonko crew. manga has had zero tension or stake just living of pre time skip nostalgia 4 arcs in a row they survived of pure plot many more to come.

They can lose without dying. You know that right?

Usopp survived Imu Sama’s attack. Is this Oda being too scared to kill off someone or his sexism for Gunko being a female? Hmmmm.

Oda's talent always delivered its best quality when tempered by a skilled editor.

As the crown jewel, One Piece used to be in the hands of highly respected editors like Onisi, without whom there never would have been 11 Supernova. Law, Kid, Bonney and their stories all exist because an editor Oda respected told him he needed to add more contemporaries to enhance the story. Oda apparently completed all their designs in a single afternoon and initially planned to have them killed off early to demonstrate the perils of the New World, but he grew attached to them and they were surprisingly popular, Law and Kid especially.

Just picture how much different the story would be without Corazon or Law's connection to Doflamingo, and how that led him to essentially being the architect of Kaidou's downfall. Kuma's part in the story now seems unimaginable without Bonney's role in it. I'll agree with anyone that tells me the rest are mostly underutilised, but I don't think One Piece would be better without their presence.

Oda writes as though he is surrounded by sound boards that echo, not walls that bounce back. He's basically gone the way of George Lucas. It's not a lack for creativity, but a filter to push them through, i.e. editorial feedback.

Young Oda in his 30s may deliver in terms of stake and tension.
He admit already
The older he gets, he's not into that serious shit anymore with limited time, plus he obviously must be worried about the future right now.
Probably he focuses more on the core story/end game right now and how he could cut it short in the most possible way.
