Imu is an extremely generic villain and that's all these guys know so of course that's what they want, I'm not sure they would understand anything else.
Currently, they're framing the story as a Jesus Vs. Satan story.

Mate for me MF painted it out clearly that the main enemy is the WG and getting the OP makes you the challenger against the WG. Imu being the head of the WG points towards him being the final villain but like I’ve been saying for years now I do believe BB will be in the final battle but Imu will be there too.
Oda has always said that with Gear 5 he wanted to subvert battle shonen tropes.
With Imu he’s doing the exact same thing. On the surface, he presents the perfect final villain: beautiful, charismatic, godlike… everything you’d expect from a battle shonen endgame. But the more you look at him, the more that image falls apart.
Cries because everyone’s mean to him
Totally incompetent and blames inevitability
Spent 800 years staring at a portrait of a girl, living in fear like Orochi
Couldn’t even stand upright on his reveal
Has the most cliché design imaginable
Am I just overrating Oda, thinking the finale of One Piece deserves more? Would you really be happy with a final villain like this, who ends up facing the protagonist without any twists or subversion of expectations? Should One Piece really be like any other battle shonen?
Or is Imu just a scam, and Oda is setting up something actually satisfying?
Oda laying it on thick since Egghead that BB wants the throne so it’s expected now that he gets it or tries to. Its funny how they think it would be this cool plot twist when it’s the more popular opinion.

Oda is subverting everyone's expectations in doing a purposefully bad manga all long. He really is GODA. He was never a bad writer. He consciously choose to write bad stuff.
