He killed his beloved Ace so much trauma that he replaced Ace asap with Sabo. Oda is genuinely terrified of Akainu and the havoc he would wreak on the readers. Oda knows plot armor can’t save Luffy from Akainu so he has to keep him busy with paperwork. Akainu scares Oda so much he has to make a fake final villain like Imu just to put his mind off Akainu. He knows it’s inevitable, but Akainu is just too strong so he needs to keep him away from the main story for as long as possible.


TLDR; Akainu genuinely gave Oda PTSD

Yea, Oda cornered himself with the way Akainu's df operates. If he lands a clean hit on you it's pretty much guaranteed to rip you apart. For this reason Akainu has to be sluggish or never be able to land a clean strike on Luffy for whatever reason. Which isn't usually how Luffy fights go.

It's gonna be interesting to see how it plays out but I think with all the abilities Luffy has, Oda can actually justify a clash with the magma fruit, if he brought Akainu during Wano time for example (replacing Kaidou), that fight could never work because Luffy would be a donut, and there's no eating your way back from that.

Think mogura from Katakuri but that's the entire fight.
