After how Luffy was portrayed as a small fish on Egghead, I really don’t see how people expect his portrayal to improve with no actual Powerups given to him lol

I think with things like that it's a matter of whether or not the story is portraying it as a bad thing.
I'm not against dark subjects in games, movies, books etc., but they have to be very tactful with them. Too many stories are lazy with the dark subjects they address

Fantastic point. It sucks when a series that gets a lot correct gets something so wrong.

I haven't played the games, but Kratos IMO has really evolved from an interesting character with no real growth, to a fully realized character, while still embracing the evil and failures associated with him, rather than retconning then.

Too many stories use negative subjects like they are free drugs to lure the reader in, then refuse to address the actual negativity in any legitimate way.

So many edgy ass anime and manga with no real depth.

I haven't read it, but I've heard Kagurabachi has really improved with this.

Even the dark stuff with really intelligent writing can dip into being edgy for the sake of it at times.
