He isn’t even the worst father in his own franchise. Pretty much every other mainstream anime has fathers that are clearly way worse than him.

The issue with the crashes is twofold:
1. Our planets magnetic grid is very unstable, and their crafts can have a hard time with that. The biggest examples of this is the sightings where a ship just kind of pops in for a few seconds and then out (they got the wrong coordinates then correct them and leave), and when their active camo fails (though some cases of active camo ships are obviously government spycraft, they've been working on the stealth planes for a long time).
2. Nukes and high powered electromagnetic shit can mess with some of these advanced craft, the slower ones. This is the actual reason for the crashes, and a big reason Advanced Races don't want us to have nukes. A: they use this planet for trade and slavery, and don't want us to blow ourselves up, and B: We can use this tech to take down some of their crafts, and if we developed high level versions of it, we could actually be a minor threat to them.
Most of the crashes we've had are a result of Advanced Beings fighting each other, but the governments have taken a few craft down over the years.
Some of the "crashes" have actually been races trying to "give" us their technology, so they could slowly use their tech to take us over without us rebelling against them. This is most prominent in the USA.
Biggest cover up is free energy.
The families and secret societies that rule the modern world through shadow governments and businesses found out about Tesla's work, and stole it, because they knew free energy would destroy the modern industrial system of war and dirty energy that keeps them in power.
Free energy is the real holy grail here. Spaceships are obviously super cool, but the real story is that the US and other Governments covered up free energy so rich trash could continue to treat us like slaves.
The "Good" ETs have a shit ton of not-interference policies.
Look at what happened with the War of the Worlds broadcast. It has to be a slow roll of disclosure.
Lemmings can't handle gay kids and immigrants, how in the hell are you supposed to convince morons that think everything they don't understand is a demon, to make nice with the aliens? They would just push for some dumb racist war.
